London Marathon: glucose monitored in fuelled race, unfuelled training and carb loading
By wearing a continuous glucose monitor, I finally get to find out whether energy gels are doing any good in my marathon races, how they compare with unfuelled training, and whether I'm doing myself any great mischief in carb loading. Skip ahead to get the comparative graph and conclusions (at 14:39) or use the chapter links to find what you're interested in.

Hacked vs standard Nike NEXT%: efficiency showdown experiment

Nike NEXT% shoes get go-faster hacks -- hopefully

This is one way to wash your windscreen... not quite sure whether the plane actually succeeded in getting wet, but it was definitely lower than the trees opposite. The fountain normally reaches 90 ft. About 4pm on 04Apr2007, at the Emperor Fountain, Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, UK. Not a scheduled event!

    This is a really late comment, I know. I‘ve watched this video years ago for the first time and just searched for it to watch it again. Your accomplishment is great and - as another guy here said - although it is not complying to the rules to me going solo is the true way to do such things. I have the dream to do it, too, although I don‘t think I could do it under 24 hours; but even that wouldn’t matter to me. Thanks for all the information. Especially the kit-lay-out on the table and your brief remarks on everything are priceless. Congratulations again and many thanks.

    Interesting test. I often wear a Stryd power meter/foot pod and that is 9g - so almost as much as you saved here. I never think that should make any significant difference however else might stop wearing it! In fact, even in the same size over 5 pairs of NEXT%, there is about a 9g difference between my "lightest" shoe and the "heaviest". I wonder if you ran in "full race kit" so you weren't carrying your shoes and ran for longer each time might see more of a trend. When have done similar "shoeoff" videos comparing shoes, I typically run 2-3 miles in each one at about my marathon pace. Also with the ones you cut then presume that has made them more like a zero drop shoe and some runners may prefer that and others not.

    • @cwartcam
      @cwartcam 3 роки тому

      Hi Tim, I've enjoyed several of your videos! For sure yes, I made my shoes zero drop (or in fact negative drop) because I felt that was my preference, being a forefoot/midfoot striker, judging by the wear patterns on my shoes. Yet I know (see prev video) that my heel does land during mid-stance, so I really didn't know if it would be better to have that wonder-material under my heel too, or just space to let my achilles tendon stretch and rebound. Nike shoes seem to have left/right mass inequality, maybe because there's a secret compartment on one side only for their own gadget? (Remember that from Lunaracers, anyway.) I'm a bit sceptical about the Stryd power meter, because as a runner one should be minimising power at any particular pace -- i.e. maximising efficiency -- and power is totally mixed up with economy. Whereas in cycling, power is just torque x rotational speed at the cranks, and clearly more is better. I've maybe overthought mass on the foot, though I'm a proverbial 9-st weakling so I'm very conscious of carrying unnecessary weight on the feet that needs to be lifted, accelerated and decelerated with every stride -- but don't know how much it really matters. Maybe I should do an experiment with an added weight on my shoe as the only variable!

    Hi there. I am impressed. I am also a Cambridge resident, I am interested in training for a less challenging adventure. To that end, which car park did you use? Did you run at a particular time of day when it was empty, and did people give you any grief for running up and down the stairs? I guess I should also ask if there is a best time to run up and down castle hill?

    • @cwartcam
      @cwartcam 7 років тому

      Thanks Archie! I used the Grafton East car park, which seems to be open 24/7 and is extremely quiet, so it hasn't caused any upset training there. (The Grand Arcade would be a different stor[e]y!) I do think it helps to innoculate the quads against mountain descents. I had it wrong in the video though: it's 73 not 63 steps, each ~19cm high, so ~14m vertical. Good luck with your own adventures!

  • @cwartcam

    Incidentally, I think that's Nicky Spinks -- outright record holder of the double Bob Graham Round -- cruising easily past me at 3:25 on the video, coming down the corridor route from Scafell Pike. You did a great job. From your trip think we may be better off going to Sergeant Man before High Raise. Also the gorge on Foxes tarn route looks a bit steep - am tempted by Lords Rake. Which route did you use up Fairfield?

    • @cwartcam
      @cwartcam 7 років тому

      When I did it, Lords Rake was considered dodgy as that precarious boulder had recently fallen into place, and there was a worry it might fall further! But I think that would be better now. I was (and am) very green; for example, following the slippery footpath down to Honister -- only when I ran the Borrowdale Fell Race did I run much faster down the nice smooth grass instead, which would have saved significant time! Can't remember route up Fairfield, but the GPS log is in the page linked to in the description here. Cheers and good luck! (PS: I may be green, but I don't know why so many choose to start in the evening, immediately committing themselves to sleep deprivation -- suited me much better to leave early am when I often wake up anyway, so I felt less wrecked.)

    • @Intake33
      @Intake33 7 років тому

      I read about the grassy drop to Honister when I read "Feet In The Clouds" - will look out for it on the recce. Interesting point re sleep - we are aiming to start at 1am to minimise mountain time in the dark. Will probably not be working the week before so was going to try reset my body clock

    Inspirational video and for me, running it solo but unverified is the true way. I'm 44 and thinking of a similar-style attempt next year or two before it's too late. Although I know it's not the most relevant measure: would you mind sharing what you were running a road marathon in at the time of your round? I think I've got the "steel" and mountain technique and know-how, but I just wonder if I am really fit enough to consider this...

    • @reddiewilson
      @reddiewilson 8 років тому

      @cwartcam 8 років тому

      Hi Eddie -- really glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I've done a few marathons around 2:40 for the past few years. But as you say, it may not be too relevant to the BGR, where a lot of it isn't really running at all (too steep up/too boggy/too rocky). Best of luck!
